Tsogo Sun's Caledon Casino Licence Moves to Somerset West After Years of Debate

Tsogo Sun has won approval to move The Caledon casino licence to Somerset West. The decision follows a four-year process filled with public debate and regulatory hurdles. The relocation paves the way for a major new casino and hospitality project in the affluent Helderberg area.

The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board granted final approval on March 12, 2026. This marks the end of a lengthy process that began in early 2022, involving public consultations and multiple regulatory reviews. Local residents and officials have closely followed the discussions, raising both support and concerns about another large casino in the Cape Town metro.

The move will allow Tsogo Sun to develop a world-class gaming and hospitality complex. Before opening, the company must meet all approval conditions, secure planning permissions, and complete construction. The project aims to boost tourism and economic activity in the Helderberg and Overberg regions.

Cape Town currently has fewer large casino options than other major South African cities. The new development is expected to fill this gap while catering to the growing demand for entertainment and luxury services in the area.

The licence relocation clears the path for construction to begin. Once operational, the casino will add a significant entertainment and tourism hub to the region. The decision also reflects the outcome of years of public and regulatory scrutiny.
