Trustee Body Responds to Motion Regarding Politics and Finance

In the heart of the academic year, Holy Cross College continues to foster an environment of open discussion and transparency. The college's commitment to academic freedom and peace has been evident, leading to a series of thoughtful conversations surrounding a recent motion passed by the Faculty Assembly.

On April 30th, the Faculty Assembly voted in favour of a motion for Holy Cross to disclose and divest from companies complicit in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This decision, however, has sparked protests and student activism in colleges and universities across the U.S., with Holy Cross College being no exception.

President Vincent Rougeau responded to the Assembly's motion on May 13th, outlining plans for dialogue and thoughtful conversations. The college's administration emphasised that the decision is not a political statement, but a commitment to academic freedom and peace.

The Board of Trustees sent an email on September 18th, stating that Holy Cross cannot accommodate the Assembly's motion. Despite this, the college remains dedicated to creating a safe and purposeful environment for students, encouraging thoughtful and empathic conversations in the pursuit of peace, both in and outside of classrooms.

Meanwhile, student activism has been on the rise, with student organisations like HCF1RST hosting events to recognise first-generation students. The college celebrated First Generation week from November 4th-8th, further emphasising its commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

As the anniversary of the October 7th massacre approaches, tensions are rising worldwide. Holy Cross College, however, continues to strive for peace, with the Luth Concert Hall hosting the Fall Concert this past week, featuring performances by the College Choir and Chamber Singers.

Looking ahead, a meeting will take place this fall to discuss the Assembly's motion in more detail. The college's transparency about its endowment has led to open discussions, allowing for a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in such decisions.

As the winter solstice approaches, the early sunsets and chilling temperatures linger into late January and much of February. Despite the cold, the spirit of dialogue and empathy remains warm within Holy Cross College, as it continues to navigate the challenges of the academic year.
