Trump's golf courses thrive as LIV Golf's go-to venues after PGA snub

Donald Trump's golf courses have become a key venue for LIV Golf, bringing in significant revenue after losing major tournaments. The former US president hosted multiple events in 2023, with more planned in the coming years. Both LIV and the PGA Tour now appear eager to work with his properties.

Trump's relationship with professional golf shifted after the January 6 Capitol riot. The PGA of America and the Royal and Ancient moved prestigious events, including the PGA Championship and the British Open, away from his courses. This left his clubs without high-profile tournaments for years.

That changed when LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, began staging events at Trump's properties. In 2022, he earned about $800,000 for hosting a single tournament. The following year, payments rose to roughly $950,000 per event. If each of the seven LIV tournaments held at his courses generated similar fees, his total earnings could reach around $6 million over four years.

The 2023 framework agreement between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, announced in June, did not address the use of Trump's courses. No changes to existing plans have been reported since. Meanwhile, LIV has spent heavily on top players, with deals like Dustin Johnson's $125 million, Phil Mickelson's $200 million, and Jon Rahm's reported $300 million.

Trump hosted three LIV events in 2023 alone. Another is scheduled for his Virginia club in 2026. The tournaments have restored some prestige to his courses, which had lost major competitions after the Capitol unrest.

Trump's golf properties now serve as regular stops for LIV Golf, providing a steady income stream. With both LIV and the PGA Tour planning future events at his clubs, his courses remain a central part of professional golf's evolving landscape. The financial benefits continue to grow as the sport's rival factions move forward with their partnership.
