Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with Mike Huckabee, prepares to tour Gaza relief locations amidst the escalating hunger crisis
In the troubled region of Gaza, a spiraling hunger crisis continues to unfold, with significant reductions in food deliveries and high casualties among civilians attempting to access aid.
According to reports, the number of meals prepared daily has dropped by 74% compared to earlier in the year, with around 259,000 meals delivered by partners through community kitchens—a stark decrease from over one million meals per day in April. Despite at least 12,000 metric tons of food being brought into Gaza since late July, more than 90% of aid was reportedly looted or taken by crowds along convoy routes, and many people have been killed or injured trying to access aid at militarized distribution points or convoys.
The United Nations, international aid organizations, and human rights experts have condemned the current system, characterizing it as inhumane and a threat to civilians. UN experts have particularly criticized the operations of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which replaced previous UN agencies' functions, describing the distribution sites as deadly and difficult to access, especially for the most vulnerable populations, such as women, children, and persons with disabilities. Nearly 1,400 people have died seeking food at these sites, with total deaths around GHF locations reaching at least 859 since late May.
The visit of US officials, including Steve Witkoff, President Trump's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and Mike Huckabee, US Ambassador to Israel, is scheduled for August 1. The White House has confirmed that US officials will visit Gaza's aid distribution sites this week. The purpose of their visit is to assess the current situation and to discuss potential solutions to the ongoing crisis.
The details of the plan will be provided once it is approved and agreed upon by President Trump. Reports indicate that President Trump has called for the US and other nations to provide food to Gaza's refugee population and has criticized Hamas for slowing aid deliveries and called for their surrender and the release of hostages to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Last week, Israel announced a 10-hour daily ceasefire in parts of Gaza to facilitate the delivery of food and medicine. However, images of starving Palestinian children in Gaza have sparked global outcry, and President Trump has publicly contradicted Netanyahu's claim of no starvation in Gaza, stating that the children he saw on TV looked very hungry.
Israel has blamed the UN for the lack of food deliveries and has shared images of aid piled up inside the Gaza Strip. Witkoff's meeting with Netanyahu during his visit is expected to focus on the Gaza cease-fire and the release of Hamas hostages.
The US officials will brief President Trump after their visit to approve a final plan for food and aid distribution into the region. As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the international community is under increasing pressure to take action and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
