Trump's Alligator Alcatraz to be shut down, halts transportation of new inmates, following judge's ruling.
In a move that has sparked controversy, U.S. President Donald Trump recently toured a new migrant detention center, the Speedway Slammer, located on an isolated airfield about 72 kilometers west of downtown Miami. The facility, which will house 1000 inmates detained as part of Trump's immigration crackdown, has been compared to the infamous Alcatraz federal prison in San Francisco Bay by the President himself.
The Speedway Slammer's unique location is surrounded by swamps filled with mosquitoes, pythons, and alligators, adding to its notorious reputation. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the opening of this new detention center, commending Nebraska Republican Gov. Jim Pillen for his cooperation in opening another facility, the Cornhusker Clink, with a capacity of 280 beds.
Supporters argue that the harsh conditions at these prisons are meant to be a deterrent, while critics claim they violate human rights. Governor Pillen has defended the Cornhusker Clink, stating that it will provide a much-needed solution to the overcrowding issue in existing detention facilities.
Trump has been vocal about the purpose of the Speedway Slammer, stating that it will handle the most menacing migrants and vicious people. The construction and oversight of the Speedway Slammer were managed by the state's Emergency Management Agency, with the agency's director Kevin Guthrie overseeing its rapid development and operation.
As the debate surrounding these detention centers continues, it remains to be seen how they will impact the immigration situation in the United States.
