Trump's agreement to disadvantage Ukraine, detrimental outcome for Europe
In the political landscape, former President Donald Trump's remarks and actions regarding Ukraine have raised eyebrows and concerns among global leaders.
Trump has been vocal in his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, labelling him a "dictator without elections" and a "clown." These comments, made publicly, have sparked debate and raised questions about the intent behind Trump's words.
Trump's criticism extends to the allegation that Ukraine squandered approximately $175 billion in US aid. However, this claim has been met with scepticism, with many questioning the accuracy of the figure and the basis for such a conclusion.
The change in leadership in Washington has led to concerns that it may embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to declare victory over Ukraine and NATO, signifying a defeat of the West. This notion is particularly troubling given Putin's order to send Russian troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Trump's criticisms and blame-shifting towards Ukraine have left his own Republican Party members and European leaders aghast. Critics argue that the US administration, under Trump, is working to undermine democracy, both at home and in Europe.
Moreover, if sanctions on Russia for starting the Ukraine war are lifted, as suggested by Trump during his discussions around the Alaska summit with Putin in 2025, he may contribute to the destruction of the rules-based world order.
Trump's exclusion of European allies, including Ukraine, from talks aimed at ending the Ukraine war, and his peace plan with Russia, which is likely to be heavily slanted against Ukraine, further fuels these concerns.
The third anniversary of the Ukraine war falls on Monday, and Putin may use this occasion to declare victory. If Trump's peace plan is implemented, there is a possibility of losing Russian-occupied territory, potentially as much as 65,000 square kilometres.
Trump's statements indicate a willingness to please Putin in shaping the new world order. His actions may risk the unity of the Trans-Atlantic alliance with Europe, which has been instrumental in shaping the world order post-World War II.
In just one month in office, Trump's actions have upended the world order, leaving many to question the future of global politics and the balance of power. The Ukraine war may be used by Putin to signify a defeat of the West itself, a prospect that is concerning to many.
