Trump states there will be no military conflict with Chicago, after sharing a foreboding image online
In a recent development, the White House's 'Border Czar', Tom Homan, has announced that President Trump has prioritised sanctuary cities, including Chicago, for enforcement actions. This announcement has sparked a wave of anticipation and concern among residents in the city.
Trump has been contemplating sending the National Guard to Chicago, following his federal takeover of Washington. He prefers cities to ask for his administration's assistance, but has repeatedly singled out Chicago as he mulls over this decision.
The enforcement actions, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), are targeting the "worst of the worst" criminals. Federal agents wearing ICE badges have already been seen making arrests on the Southwest Side of Chicago, with at least five individuals confirmed detained.
The community in Chicago is responding in various ways. The community arts collective SRBCC hosted an event in Hermosa, showcasing native music and dance performances, and raising funds for legal expenses from ICE detentions and prosecutions. El Grito Chicago, the city's festival for Mexican Independence Day, postponed its event next weekend due to ICE activity.
Local leaders have spoken out against Trump's actions. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticised Trump for threatening to go to war with Chicago, while Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed Pritzker's sentiment, stating that Trump's threats are beneath the honor of the nation.
Aurora, another city in Illinois, held its Mexican Independence Day Parade despite fears of large-scale immigration enforcement operations. However, the event saw a lower turnout compared to usual. The parade was an affirmation for those who attended, with spectator Jeremiah Pennell stating, "As much as we're Latino, we're American. We belong here and you know, we won't be put in a corner, we won't be made to be afraid."
The Tenants Union FIBC also held a fundraiser, selling homemade food to raise money for family members recently detained by ICE. The event offered education for residents on how to handle potential ICE raids and stressed the importance of knowing their rights.
The White House 'Border Czar' expects a surge of immigration enforcement actions in Chicago this week, with the use of National Guard troops to protect and support these operations "on the table". However, President Trump has stated that "we're not going to war" with Chicago.
Illinois U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth has labelled Trump's actions as not normal. As the situation unfolds, the residents of Chicago and other sanctuary cities continue to navigate this challenging time, seeking support, safety, and their rights.
