In a significant development, over 800 combat drones were used in an unprecedented attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, resulting in the death of four people and injuring dozens. This marks a new escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for a global response against this record wave of drone attacks on his country. He has urged for sanctions against Russia, strong tariffs, and other trade restrictions for Russia.

Zelensky stated that Russia is trying to inflict pain on Ukraine and carry out increasingly brazen strikes. He also accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of testing the world to see if it will accept such attacks and live with them.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated his readiness to impose the second phase of sanctions against Moscow. Trump plans to speak with Putin "very soon," "in the next few days." However, Trump's efforts towards a direct meeting with Zelensky have been unsuccessful so far.

The U.S. has been imposing additional 25 percent tariffs on products from India due to its oil deals with Russia. Interestingly, India is currently the only trading partner of Russia against which the U.S. is imposing tariffs in the context of the Ukraine conflict.

The U.S. is planning to put pressure on Putin using sanctions to achieve a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict. A meeting is planned today in Washington between several European officials and the U.S. Treasury Department to discuss various forms of economic pressure on Russia, including new sanctions.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the U.S. is ready to increase pressure on Russia. He also emphasised the need for the support of its European partners to impose further sanctions on Russia. European officials participating in the meeting include the European Union’s sanctions envoy David O'Sullivan, accompanied by staff focused on energy, sanctions, financial services, and trade.

If the U.S. and EU intervene and impose further sanctions, such as tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, the Russian economy could potentially collapse completely. This collapse, according to some analysts, would reportedly bring Putin to the negotiating table.

Trump, however, has expressed his displeasure about the ongoing fighting and loss of life in Ukraine. He stated that he is "not happy" about the situation and is concerned about the humanitarian crisis it is causing.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate, the international community is closely watching the developments and the potential responses from global leaders.
