Trump deal poses danger, warns Manfred Weber: Europe needs enhanced military capacities and increased self-rule

In the aftermath of the US-EU tariff deal, Manfred Weber, the head of the European People's Party (EPP), has labeled it a "wake-up call" for Europe. Weber, a prominent German politician, believes that the deal demonstrates how the US president is using military might to push economic interests against Europe.

Weber advocates for Europe to become more sovereign and stronger, and to orient itself geopolitically and economically away from the USA. He proposes a dynamic of armament to counteract Europe's military weakness, suggesting the creation of a European cyber brigade to protect the digital space of Europe and the building of its own satellite systems to control weapons without relying on US satellite data.

The EU, as Weber describes, is an "economic giant and a military dwarf". He emphasizes the need for Europe to push forward the Mercosur agreement to create a trading space with 700 million people without tariffs. The creation of a European cyber brigade, according to Weber, is a response to the fact that smaller EU countries are not able to protect their digital world alone.

Weber's vision for Europe includes a united Europe that can take international action and defend its interests. He expresses optimism about the European dynamism in defense that he has observed in the past two or three years. However, he warns that failure to implement European defense projects would be a historical failure of today's political class.

The need for a stronger Europe is not just about global politics, according to Weber. Europe's military weakness, he argues, leads to job losses in Germany. He compares the implementation of a European defense system to the euro, stating that it cannot be abolished due to economic consequences.

Weber plants the implementation of European defense projects like the building of own satellite systems and the founding of a European cyber brigade in the context of the new defense fund and the multi-year financial framework of the EU for 2028-2034, in which 131 billion Euros are planned. However, concrete timelines for these projects have not been announced yet.

Weber believes that only a united Europe can take international action and defend its interests. He wants a Europe that is "unwound" and believes that the necessary European defense projects must be implemented to have a say in the world of tomorrow. In the current state of global affairs, where all states are arming and preparing, Weber's vision for a stronger and sovereign Europe seems more relevant than ever.
