In the digital world, things don't always go as planned. Websites can experience issues such as form failures, page vanishings, and server meltdowns. But it's not just about keeping the site running smoothly. A user's perception of a brand isn't just shaped by when things go right, but by how well you handle things when they don't.

Good error handling aims to keep users confident, informed, and in control. Clear, specific, and helpful error messages are preferred. Vague and tech-jargon-filled error messages are annoying to users. Real-time form validation provides instant feedback to users, highlighting errors as they type and using simple, inline messages next to each field.

When it comes to 404 pages, thoughtful design, clear communication, and a touch of personality can turn a frustrating moment into a seamless user experience. A good 404 page should acknowledge the issue, offer solutions, and link to key pages. For instance, Dropbox's 404 page uses a playful illustration and simple links for easy navigation, while Lego's 404 page features a sad Lego character, fun copy, and a link back to the homepage. Spotify's 404 page has a clever, on-brand message and a helpful link to guide users or convert them.

This year, KOTA, a Creative Digital Agency based in Clerkenwell London, specializing in Creative Web Design, Web Development, Branding, and Digital Marketing, was tasked with revamping a global design agency's digital identity. The ISI Global project in 2025 saw KOTA bring a fresh, modern look to the agency's online presence.

In 2024, KOTA also undertook the Futureform project, reimagining traditional financial design for Futureform. The agency's innovative approach to design and development continues to set them apart in the industry.

Introduced this year is KOTA's Brand Pulse Audit tool, a new favourite tool for auditing brand performance. This powerful tool allows businesses to gain insights into their brand's online presence and make data-driven decisions to improve their digital strategy.

As we navigate the digital landscape, it's clear that a user-friendly approach to error handling and 404 pages is essential for maintaining a positive brand image and providing a seamless user experience.
