Triton Tempo Revolutionizes Poker with Chess-Style Time Management

A new chess clock system has arrived in high-stakes poker. The Triton Tempo, launched at the Triton Jeju event in March 2026, is changing how players manage their decision time. Leading professionals like Daniel Negreanu have called it a major step forward for the game. The Triton Tempo system replaces traditional shot clocks with a personal time bank for each player. Unlike fixed time chips, this approach lets competitors allocate their time freely throughout the tournament. The earlier a player joins, the larger their starting bank, with extra time added as they advance deeper.

Players can now take as much time as they need for critical decisions, rather than rushing under fixed limits. The remaining time for every competitor is displayed live on the Triton Plus app. This transparency helps maintain fairness while keeping the game moving. Top players have welcomed the change. Negreanu, a long-time advocate for chess clocks in poker, described the system as a 'game-changer'. Jason Koon and Phil Hellmuth also praised its ability to balance speed and strategy. The networked clocks ensure smooth operation, with time adjustments handled automatically as the tournament progresses.

The Triton Tempo system marks a shift in how poker tournaments manage time. Players now have more control over their decisions, while organisers maintain a steady pace. The innovation, already in use at Triton events, could soon appear in other high-profile competitions.
