Trial of Ballweg: Question of identity: "Are you Mr. Ballhof?", along with jovial exchanges
In the halls of the Stuttgart District Court, the trial of Michael Ballweg, a prominent member of the "Querdenken" movement, has been unfolding for half a year. The courtroom has become a meeting point for his supporters, as well as witnesses from various parts of Germany, including Hesse and Brandenburg.
The trial began on a Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Room 6. Michael Ballweg, defended by Reinhard Loeffler, stands accused, while Hans Boehme, a seasoned lawyer with 40 years of practice, represents the interests of the former software company of the "Querdenken" founder.
A witness from Hesse confirmed that food, including a cake brought by Michael Ballweg's ex-wife, was provided during demonstrations organized by Ballweg, sometimes for free. The same witness also mentioned that Ballweg's ex-wife was known to cook and bring cake for the demonstrations.
The trial has been surrounded by allegations of political influence. According to the defense lawyers, Dr. Reiner Fuellmich, an internationally active investigator, could potentially influence the course of the trial. This is suggested by the defense documents that allege orchestrated interference and political motivation involving the Verfassungsschutz (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution).
However, the public prosecutor's office has not agreed to the discontinuation of the proceedings, and they have also filed a motion for recusal against the three professional judges, although this was not granted.
The trial has not been without its moments of levity. During one session, the courtroom erupted in laughter when a man from Brandenburg identified Michael Ballweg as "Mr. Ballhof." Another time, the man from Brandenburg received 1000 euros from "Ballhof" for medical support at large events.
The trial is scheduled to last until October 2, 2025, with 20 more trial dates remaining. Despite the ongoing proceedings, it seems that the saga of Michael Ballweg's trial will continue to captivate the public for some time yet.
