Global health crisis - Trial for mask theft from NRW central storage facility

On a Thursday, a guy (36) from Neuss will appear before a local court to face charges of stealing thousands of FFP2 masks worth €76,000 from the previous NRW central warehouse at Messe Düsseldorf. The court alleges that this man worked at the Düsseldorf trade fair in 2020 and is suspected of stealing the masks.

During the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the state established a massive warehouse filled with protective gear at the Düsseldorf trade fair center. Authorities claim he stole 23 boxes of FFP2 masks between May and December 2020 with the intention of making a profit. They believe he had an accomplice who remains unidentified.

The district court alleges that the man tried to sell the masks to a Düsseldorf police officer in early December 2020, who served as a "fake buyer." He was arrested temporarily at the time. The man currently faces charges of theft and attempted fraud. The initial trial is planned for a single day.
