Traveler Apprehended at Berlin Brandenburg Airport with a Large Walrus Tusk in Baggage

In an unusual find, customs officers at Berlin's BER airport have confiscated a 60 cm long, 2 kg walrus tusk. The tusk, a particularly protected species, was discovered during baggage screening of a flight from Tbilisi, where X-rays aroused suspicion.

The tusk, adorned with surface decorations, was found wrapped in a bedsheet in the luggage of a Georgian traveler, a 24-year-old Russian woman. The seizure took place on Saturday, and the source of the news is news aktuell.

The woman now faces a fine of up to €10,000, but a purchase transaction may affect the final penalty. The Potsdam Customs Office, the authority responsible for this case, can provide more details.

It is important to note that the name of the 24-year-old Russian traveler has not been publicly disclosed. The walrus tusk, a species known as Odobenus rosmarus, is strictly protected under international law due to its endangered status.

The Potsdam Customs Office is committed to enforcing these regulations to protect wildlife and ensure their survival for future generations. If you have any questions or concerns about importing or exporting protected species, they encourage you to reach out to them for guidance.
