Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) commences the modernization and enhancement of Metrolink and train infrastructure systems
The transportation sector in Greater Manchester is set to undergo a significant transformation, with the announcement of a new £1.6bn deal for the Metrolink light rail network infrastructure project. This project, scheduled to commence in 2027 and last up to 12 years, has been initiated by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, will recognise achievements and innovations in transport planning on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The CiTTi Awards, a celebration of the sector's accomplishments, is also the platform for this major announcement.
The Metrolink asset renewals program, a significant part of the new agreement, will involve replacing key infrastructure like track, overhead lines, and the distribution system that provides power to trams. The new agreement, however, does not specify the exact nature of the Access for All rail schemes or Travel Hubs that will be included in the project.
The Metrolink light rail network infrastructure project aims to maintain and grow the network, with works under the new agreement extending beyond the traditional scope of Metrolink, encompassing a wider range of improvements and expansions. The contract also includes a variety of additional works, such as Metrolok stop improvements, new stops, line extensions, vehicle infrastructure, and more.
Danny Vaughan, the chief network officer at TfGM, is seeking innovative, efficient, and collaborative approaches from suppliers for the next generation of Metrolink and rail accessibility infrastructure in Greater Manchester. The procurement process for the Metrolink light rail network infrastructure project encourages all interested parties to engage with TfGM throughout the process.
The new deal is a significant step towards supporting the ambitions for a world-class, integrated Bee Network, which aims to connect communities across Greater Manchester. The total investment for the transport sector in Greater Manchester stands at £30m.
