Transformable sofas and jumps-worthy ottomans are amongst the covert joys found within the residence of this interior designer's dwelling.
In the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, a historic property in the Old Louisville neighbourhood has undergone a remarkable transformation. Previously used as student housing and divided into a series of small rooms, the 1897-built home, with its Victorian-era exterior, now boasts a refreshingly modern and open interior.
Bethany Adams, an interior designer, purchased the property and embarked on a renovation journey. Despite the home's initial state—lacking a kitchen, incredibly dark, with outdated systems and a "terrifying" basement—Adams saw its potential.
The outdoor balcony, aligned with the historic charm of the neighbourhood, now features a traditional black iron seating set with Sunbrella striped cushions. The rug on the balcony is an indoor-outdoor Chinoiserie pattern from Anthropologie, adding a touch of vibrancy to the space.
The dining room, a unique space with eleven sides and one fireplace, showcases a vintage Steve Chase lacquered parchment design dining table. The dining room's colour scheme was extended from the adjacent living room, incorporating light pink faux leather on the vintage brass dining chairs.
The living room, with its stained glass window-inspired colour palette, comfortable upholstered furniture, and a modern, geometric aesthetic, is a perfect blend of old and new. The vintage Dromedaire sofa by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois is the most functional and eye-catching element in the family room.
The main bedroom features Graffito wallpaper by Kelly Wearstler, while the older daughter's room showcases Backdrop for Schumacher's Bloomsbury wallpaper and a queen-sized CB2 white boucle Diana bed. The home library features built-ins that were extended and colour-drenched in a bold hue.
To balance the asymmetry and dark wood paneling, Adams refinished the floors with a lighter, matte stain. The pink mirrored acrylic hood surround was added to the space in 2023, adding a modern touch to the historic home.
The cozy breakfast nook features a vintage Danish settee upholstered in Crypton fabric and a 1970s Italian brass and smoked-glass adjustable-height table. The price of samples for some materials is $5, $2, and $5.99, while the price of swatches is $2.50.
The property was rescued from neglect by a local investor and restored to a saleable condition. The search results do not provide information about an investor renovating a historic house in the Old Louisville neighbourhood. This historic home, recognised by the National Register of Historic Places as having the most contiguous Victorian homes in the United States, is now a testament to the beauty that can be found in blending the old with the new.
