According to the affidavit, there was no interaction between Zarutska and the suspect before the attack. The incident occurred approximately four and a half minutes into the train ride, with the suspect pulling a knife out of his pocket, unfolding it, and striking Zarutska three times.
Decarlos was seen wearing an orange sweatshirt in the affidavit. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., was arrested after being released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
