Train collision in Egypt leaves several dead, numerous injured

In Egypt, a train crash occurred between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh, resulting in at least three fatalities and around 100 reported injuries. The incident, described as a "tragic accident" by the Ministry of Health, involved two out of seven carriages derailing along the tracks along the Mediterranean coast.

Photos taken by Egyptian news sites show the derailed carriages in a ditch, a stark reminder of the poor condition of trains and tracks in Egypt's railway network, one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, spanning approximately 10,000 kilometers.

The Egyptian National Railways (ENR), responsible for the maintenance and operation of the railway network, last underwent extensive renovations during the 2000s and early 2010s as part of modernization projects. However, necessary repairs have been long delayed, and the condition of the network has shown little improvement over time.

Inadequate training of train personnel is sometimes cited as a cause of accidents in Egypt's railway network. The poor condition of the network may have contributed to the recent crash, though the exact cause of the derailment remains unknown.

This is not the first major accident attributed to the condition of Egypt's railway network. In 2002, one of the worst train crashes in Egypt's history occurred, resulting in over 360 fatalities. The fire on the train in 2002 was one of the deadliest train accidents in Egypt's history.

Thirty ambulances were deployed to treat and transport the injured, but the exact number of hospitalized individuals has not been specified. The incident underscores the need for improved safety measures and infrastructure in Egypt's railway network.

As the investigation into the cause of the derailment continues, it is hoped that this tragedy will serve as a catalyst for much-needed improvements in Egypt's railway network, ensuring the safety of passengers and staff alike.
