German Climber Severely Injured in Avalanche on Zugspitze's "Stopselzieher" Via Ferrata

A tragic incident occurred on the Zugspitze mountain over the weekend, leaving a 23-year-old German climber severely injured. The accident took place on the "Stopselzieher" via ferrata, specifically in Ehrwald, district of Reutte, at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters.

The avalanche occurred around 5:50 PM on Saturday. Warm temperatures of the day were likely the trigger for the avalanche. The climber was descending when the incident occurred, and the avalanche was wet and dragged the climber approximately 500 meters through rocky terrain.

The leader of the group climbing the "Stopselzieher" via ferrata was a 55-year-old DAV (German Alpine Club) tour guide from the Stuttgart area. The 18-year-old companion alerted emergency services and descended to the injured climber. The 18-year-old climber was unharmed and taken to the valley by police helicopter.

The injured climber was left at the snow surface. The rescue helicopter airlifted the injured 23-year-old climber to the clinic in Murnau. The 18-year-old climber also accompanied the rescue team to the clinic to support the injured climber.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of mountain climbing and the importance of being prepared for all eventualities. Our thoughts are with the injured climber and their family during this difficult time.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
