Tragic Train Crash in Egypt: At Least Three Killed, Over 100 Injured

A devastating train crash occurred on the route between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh in Egypt, claiming at least three lives and injuring more than 100 people. The incident, described as a "tragic accident" by the Ministry of Health, has raised concerns about the safety of Egypt's railway network.

Photographs show the derailed carriages in a ditch, with two out of the seven carriages sustaining significant damage. The cause of the accident was a depression along the tracks.

The Egyptian National Railway (ENR), the state railway authority responsible for the maintenance and operation of the railway in Egypt, has been tasked with investigating the cause of the crash. The ENR oversees the country's rail infrastructure and services, maintaining a network that spans approximately 10,000 kilometers, making it one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East.

Sadly, Egypt's railway network has a history of accidents. One of the worst was a train fire in 2002 that resulted in over 360 deaths. Long-overdue repair work on the railway network has been delayed, and inadequate training of train personnel is sometimes cited as a cause of accidents.

Thirty ambulances were deployed to treat the injured and transport them to hospitals. The injured are currently receiving medical attention, and the ENR is working to ensure the safety of passengers in the aftermath of the crash.

As the investigation into the cause of the accident continues, the focus remains on the safety and well-being of those affected by the tragedy. The ENR has pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future and to improve the condition of trains and tracks on Egypt's railway network.
