Tragic announciement in Saarland: honoring the fallen police officer who was killed

On a somber day in Saarlouis, hundreds of uniformed police officers and members of the community gathered to pay their respects to fallen officer Simon Bohr. The 18-year-old suspect, who had been involved in a gas station robbery on August 21, had caused the tragic death of Officer Bohr.

The funeral procession wound through the city for about 1.6 kilometers before arriving at the cemetery where a private burial took place. A painted heart was placed in front of a podium with a photo of Officer Bohr in the sanctuary.

The funeral service took place in an evangelical church in Saarlouis, with approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people in attendance. Reverend Jörg Beckers described the farewell as "incomprehensible, disruptive, horrifying, and infinitely sad." Pastor Beckers also described Officer Bohr as "a police officer through and through."

Officer Bohr was described as an incredibly positive person, professional, reliable, and approachable. He was also selfless, always advocating for others and never speaking ill of anyone. Police President Thorsten Weiler stated that the Saarland police is going through one of its darkest hours since August 21.

The perpetrator of the gas station robbery on August 21 in Völklingen, who shot Officer Bohr, was previously known to the police. The public prosecutor's office is investigating the case, including for murder.

Saarland's Minister President Anke Rehlinger and Interior Minister Reinhold Jost (both SPD) attended the church service. Among other pieces, a trumpet solo of the Beatles' song "Yesterday" was played during the service. The widow of Officer Bohr addressed the mourners during the church service, but her words were not made public.

A central memorial service for Officer Bohr is planned for Friday in Saarbrücken. Police Officer Simon Bohr gave everything for the protection and security of his fellow human beings and lived for his calling, ultimately paying the ultimate price.
