Tragedy strikes again as another train collision occurs in Egypt, leaving numerous casualties.
In a tragic incident, a train derailment occurred on the track between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh in Egypt, leaving at least three people dead and over 100 injured. The state railway authority, responsible for maintaining and modernizing the country's railway network, confirmed the derailment.
The derailment involved two out of the seven carriages, with reports suggesting that a dip along the tracks may have caused the accident. The derailed carriages ended up in a ditch, and Egyptian news sites are sharing photos of the incident.
Egypt's railway network, one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East with a track length of around 10,000 kilometers, has been neglected and requires urgent renovations and modernization. Current efforts to expand and upgrade the network include projects led by companies such as Orascom Construction and Siemens Mobility since 2021.
However, the poor condition of trains and tracks in Egypt's railway network is a recurring issue. Inadequate training of train staff is sometimes cited as a cause of accidents in Egypt. The worst train accident in the country occurred in 2002, resulting in more than 360 deaths due to a fire on a train.
Reports are still emerging about the cause of the derailment, and investigations are ongoing. The Egyptian Health Ministry is actively responding to the incident. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.
As the situation develops, we will continue to provide updates on this unfortunate incident.
