Traffic Accident Leads to Permanent Closure of Northern Runway in Freiburg, South France
On August 31, 2025, a serious car accident occurred on the federal motorway 5, heading towards Karlsruhe. The incident took place at around 16:30, approximately one kilometer after the Freiburg-South junction.
The accident involved a 72-year-old man who veered off the road to the right, overturned, and came to rest in a ditch. The car he was driving was completely destroyed and had to be towed away.
The man was injured in the accident and was taken to a local hospital. As of current knowledge, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Traffic police in Freiburg are investigating the cause of the accident. At present, the details of the police officer leading the investigation are not available. However, it is known that in similar cases, the Traffic Commission 2 (Verkehrskommissariat 2) in Cologne takes charge of the investigation.
Traffic was guided past the accident site starting from about 17:15. The northbound lane of the BAB 5 was fully closed for about 45 minutes due to the accident. As of now, there are still potential traffic disruptions.
A rescue helicopter was deployed to the accident site to assist with the man's rescue. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown.
