Tourist succumbed to death at the Colosseum - Tourist Guide Perishes After Collapse in Colosseum, Rome
In a heartbreaking incident, a 60-year-old tour guide collapsed and could not be resuscitated inside the ancient amphitheater of the Colosseum in Rome. The news was announced by a message from fellow union members.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening around 5:30 PM, on the first floor of the nearly two-thousand-year-old symbol of Rome. According to reports, the guide had been feeling unwell before the incident.
The state administration of the Colosseum confirmed the incident. At the time, temperatures in Rome were above 30 degrees Celsius, and the Colosseum, built in the first century AD, often traps heat.
Several other tour guides have blamed the working conditions for their colleague's death. Italian tour guide Paola Salvatori stated that it's impossible to work under the conditions they're forced to endure every day due to overtourism.
Despite the efforts of several tourists, the woman could not be revived. Over 14.7 million paying visitors visited the Colosseum in 2021, making it one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions.
Other Italian media reported colleagues saying that the guide died of the heat due to working in high temperatures. The exact cause of the woman's death is not specified in the article.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased tour guide, licensed since 2017. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those who work in the tourism industry, particularly in popular attractions like the Colosseum.
