Citizens University (CSU) urges total removal of funds from complete rejectionists - Total Abolition of Citizens' Financial Support for Complete Non-Compliance Proposed by CSU
In a recent statement to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Achim Brötel, President of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities and a CDU politician, called for tougher sanctions on unemployment benefit recipients who miss their job center appointments without valid reasons.
Brötel highlighted that around 30-40% of all job center appointments are missed, and in some places, it even reaches half. He suggested a 30% reduction in benefits for those who fail to attend their appointments without a valid excuse.
The Labor Minister, Bärbel Bas (SPD), acknowledged the issue but finds it challenging to completely withdraw unemployment benefits from total refusers. She cited the German constitution as a reason for the complexity of such a move, emphasizing the need to ensure a minimum existence in Germany.
The CSU is also pushing for a complete cut in unemployment benefits for total refusers. However, Bas has not yet commented on this specific proposal.
Brötel made it clear that unemployment benefits are not a form of unconditional basic income. He stressed the importance of job seekers actively participating in the job market and attending their appointments as a condition for receiving benefits.
Meanwhile, Bas reiterated her commitment to supporting those in need while ensuring that the system is fair and encourages active job seeking. The debate on tougher sanctions for unemployment benefit recipients who miss their job center appointments without a valid reason is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
