Torstein Træen Leads Vuelta a España Amidst Challenges and Comebacks

Torstein Træen, the Norwegian cyclist currently leading the Vuelta a España, is relishing his time in the maillot rojo, even though he knows Jonas Vingegaard is likely to retake the lead in the coming days.

Træen's journey to the top of the Vuelta has been far from easy. His most recent Grand Tour was at last year's Vuelta, where his best stage placing was 34th. This year, however, things have taken a different turn.

Træen's current success can be traced back to his recovery from a concussion, which led him to contemplate his future and even entertain extreme thoughts. Seeking help in his home country, he managed to get back on track and race at Eschborn-Frankfurt on May 5.

Despite the challenges, Træen finished second out of the breakaway on stage 6 of the Vuelta, overtaking Jonas Vingegaard to earn the stint in the maillot rojo. This is the first time in his career he's led any stage race, let alone a Grand Tour.

Træen's mental toughness was highlighted during his struggles with various issues, as he spoke to the media on the race's first rest day. His comments about his mental struggle were serious, despite being delivered with a deadpan tone.

Træen's Vuelta is his best Grand Tour performance of the four he's started. His first Grand Tour was the Tour de France in 2023, which became 21 days of struggle due to fracturing his elbow on the first stage. Remarkably, he rode the entirety of his first Grand Tour with a broken elbow, just a year after recovering from testicular cancer surgery.

Træen's career has been filled with comebacks and overcoming adversity. In 2022, he was diagnosed with cancer, and in March 2023, he suffered a concussion. Other riders, such as Quinn Simmons and Taco van der Hoorn, have also experienced serious struggles with concussions in recent seasons.

As Træen continues to lead the Vuelta, he is without a contract for the moment, and it will be something for his agent to figure out while he concentrates on the race. However, he is still in great shape after bouncing back from his concussion recovery.

On Tuesday, Træen could lose the maillot rojo on another uphill finale to El Ferial Larra Belagua. Regardless of the outcome, Træen's resilience and determination have made him a force to be reckoned with in the world of cycling. Currently representing the team Bahrain Victorious at the Vuelta a España 2025, Træen's story is one of hope and perseverance.
