Timely Location: Perfect Timing
The Class of 2029 at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) officially began their educational journey in early August. The 35 talented students, hailing from 17 U.S. states and 2 foreign countries, were welcomed in a series of ceremonies designed to mark the start of their exciting new chapter.
The White Coat Ceremony, a traditional rite of passage for medical students, allowed the new dental students to celebrate with family, friends, faculty, and advisors. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, the ceremony was held in smaller gatherings organized by the academic society, creating a more intimate setting for students to celebrate the milestone.
The white coats, symbolising the students' commitment to the medical profession, were given by the academic society directors. These coats will become a constant reminder of their dedication and the high standards they are expected to uphold.
The students have consistently performed at the top of their class, with an average GPA of 3.94. This academic excellence was evident from the start, as the students were immersed in the medical curriculum alongside incoming medical students during their first week, known as the Introduction to the Profession.
Dean William Giannobile, in his remarks at the Welcome Ceremony, stated that the students have chosen a demanding yet highly rewarding path. He emphasised the importance of their chosen profession and encouraged them to strive for excellence throughout their time at HSDM.
The students will find others who share their passion and determination at Harvard. Their classmates, faculty, and staff will become their trusted friends, advisors, mentors, and role models. The students will be supported by a dedicated team throughout their journey at HSDM.
The students' undergraduate institutions are 29 different institutions, reflecting the diverse backgrounds that make up the Class of 2029. This diversity will enrich the learning environment and foster a spirit of collaboration and camaraderie among the students.
As they embark on this new journey, the students can look forward to a rewarding career in the field of dentistry. With their passion, determination, and the support of their community, they are well-equipped to make a significant impact in the world of dental medicine.
