Renowned Violin Maestro Itzhak Perlman celebrates his 80th birthday, continuing to captivate the world with his exceptional talent in classical music - Timeless Music Icon from the Realm of Pop Standards:
Itzhak Perlman: A Violinist's Journey Through Music and Life
Itzhak Perlman, born in 1945 in Jaffa, Israel, has made a name for himself as one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time. Despite contracting polio at the age of four, Perlman's spirit was undeterred, and he went on to receive musical education in Israel and later studied at the New York Juilliard School.
Perlman's career took off in the 1970s, with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and a first performance at Carnegie Hall. Since then, he has collaborated with artists such as John Williams, Plácido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, and popstars like Billy Joel. He has also worked with orchestras ranging from the Vienna to the Berlin Philharmonic.
The theme from "Schindler's List" is still a significant piece in Perlman's career. Released in 1993, the film tells the story of businessman Oskar Schindler, who saved hundreds of Jews from Nazi concentration camps. Perlman's moving performance of the soundtrack's title theme has made him most famous.
Perlman's repertoire is vast, including appearances on "Sesame Street," performances of the US national anthem, and a collaboration with Billy Joel on "We Didn't Start the Fire." Despite exploring genres beyond classical music, Perlman is still considered one of the greats, in the same league as Yehudi Menuhin and Jascha Heifetz.
Perlman's performance schedule is already booked well into next year. He continues to perform on the concert stage and plays on a Stradivari instrument from 1714, once owned by his late colleague Menuhin.
Perlman advises his students to practice four to five hours a day, with a 10-minute break each hour. He emphasises the importance of never getting bored with their music, even if they play a piece multiple times.
Alongside his wife Toby, Perlman runs a summer school for young musicians on Shelter Island near New York City. With his inspiring story and exceptional talent, Perlman continues to leave a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
