Gonzalez Byass's Flagship Palmas Collection Wins Top Honours at DWWA

Bodegas Gonzalez Byass, the company behind the celebrated Tiio Pepe Sherry brand, has once again proven its mastery in winemaking with the release of its flagship Palmas collection. This collection, a selection of four wines at different stages of biological ageing, has won a series of prestigious awards in the 2025 edition of the DWWA.

The eponymous Fino, Tiio Pepe, remains the flagbearer for the bodega's range. Each year, an 'En Rama' iteration of Tiio Pepe is released, unfined and unfiltered, offering a taste of the bodega's traditional methods.

The One Palm (Una Palma) wine, aged for approximately six years, retains strong flor influence but with more complexity than the standard Tiio Pepe. The judges praised its 'stunning flow of texture and depth and a salty, umami finish.'

The Two Palmas (Dos Plamas) wine, aged for approximately eight years, features finer flor character, deeper nuttiness, and vivid salinity. It was described as 'a masterclass in winemaking.'

The Tres Palmas wine, after ten years of ageing, has minimal flor left and oxidative notes come to the fore with greater clarity. It was described as 'tantalising waves of honey, roasted almond and dried apple barely scratch the surface of this impressive style.'

The Cuatro Palmas is a rare Amontillado, aged over 50 years. The oxidative character is as crucial as the biological influence, creating great complexity and elegance. With a Best in Show distinction in addition to the Platinum accolade, the Cuatro Palmas was confirmed as 'almost as good as wine can be: these are essences, crafted not simply from fermented grapes but from lengthy biological and chemical ageing processes, from refined craftsmanship, and from time itself.'

The Palmas collection's cellar geography and ethnography feature heavily in its creation. The key advisor at the founding of the wine brand Bodegas González Byass was Andrés Palacios, who led the management of Bodega Tío Pepe for over 50 years.

Tiio Pepe's wines remain timeless classics, true to themselves and to the history behind them. The name Tiio Pepe pays tribute to the founder's mentor, Jose (Pepe). Antonio Flores is the winemaker at Gonzalez Byass, continuing the legacy of excellence established by the bodega's founders.

In the 2025 edition of the DWWA, the Dos Palmas attained a Gold Medal with a 95-point score. The Tres Palmas and Cuatro Palmas were awarded top Platinum medals, both scoring 97 points. The Palmas collection is a testament to Gonzalez Byass's commitment to quality and tradition.
