Throngs of Workers Jobless: Major Industrial Corporation Shuts Down Facility in Bavaria
In the small, 3,500-inhabitant village of Ettringen, a significant blow has been dealt as the UPM mill, a major employer, prepares to close its doors. This decision, made autonomously by the company management, will result in the loss of jobs for a third of the village's workforce.
The Finnish company, UPM, is the entity responsible for the closure. Employees, including Stefan Fendt who was set to begin his training as a healthcare educator, are now facing uncertainty due to the impending dismissals.
UPM manager, Gunnar Eberhardt, defends the cost-cutting measures, stating the company's responsibility towards its 5,000 other employees in the graphic papers sector. He claims that the closure is part of UPM's selective adjustment of paper capacity to customer demand. This, he argues, will enable the efficient and flexible use of the company's remaining paper machines.
However, the closure is not just affecting the direct employees. Numerous suppliers and crafts businesses in Ettringen are now fighting for their existence due to the ripple effects of the closure.
The social plan for the closure, as claimed by Gunnar Eberhardt, is "absolutely market-compliant." Yet, the news has left Mayor Robert Sturm of Ettringen in shock. Despite the town council's efforts, the decision cannot be prevented.
All 235 employees, along with the trade union and works council, are taking legal action in the Munich Regional Labour Court to secure better terms during this challenging time. The future of Ettringen hangs in the balance as the community braces for the impact of the UPM mill closure.
