Three new steam facilities are planned to open in New York City, promising a heat-soaked experience for residents and visitors alike.
Three New Bathhouses to Open in New York City
New York City is set to welcome three new bathhouses this fall, as the saunascape of the city continues to grow and diversify. Among the new additions is Lore Bathing Club, a two-story, 6,200-square-foot space located at 676 Broadway in NoHo.
Adam Elzer, co-founder of Lore, observed that New York City is underserved in terms of bathhouses designed for everyday use. In response, Lore aims to serve Manhattanites seeking a regular place to sweat, employing an unlimited monthly membership model. The club will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Lore Bathing Club will feature a dry heat sauna, cold water pool, and an infrared sauna. Early access rates start at $89 per week or $210 per month. The exact opening dates have not been released, but they hope to begin welcoming patrons later this month or next.
Another new bathhouse, Othership, already has a location in the Flatiron District and is opening a new space in Williamsburg. Amanda Laine, co-founder of Othership, stated that New Yorkers have been particularly primed for the concept and have embraced emotional in-sauna guided experiences more naturally than Canadians.
New Yorkers have found the ice baths at Othership to be the coldest they've ever experienced. Othership Williamsburg is designed to offer a wellness-focused, sober social experience, appealing to young people.
In addition to the NoHo and Williamsburg locations, Othership has plans for another location on the Upper East Side. The 13,500-square-foot former yoga studio isn't scheduled to open until 2027.
Most city saunas are currently pay-per-visit, but both Lore and Othership have removed some "excess" from other sauna spaces to focus on the core components of a bathhouse and keep costs down for members.
Torontonians generally have an easier time immersing themselves in the cold compared to New Yorkers, according to Amanda Laine. However, with the arrival of these new bathhouses, New Yorkers will have more opportunities to embrace the cold and enjoy the benefits of regular sauna use.
As the saunascape of New York City continues to evolve, these new bathhouses will provide Manhattanites and others with a new destination for relaxation, wellness, and socialising.
