Romanian Air Force Receives Additional F-16 Fighting Falcons

The Romanian Air Force has received three more F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft from Norway, as announced by the Ministry of Defense on August 28. These aircraft, which have a remaining service life of at least ten years, will join the 21 already delivered under the contract for the purchase of 32 F-16s.

The newest additions will be assigned to the 571st Fighter Squadron, part of the 57th Air Base "Captain Aviator Constantin Cantacuzino" at Mihail Kogălniceanu. Five of the delivered aircraft are already allocated to this squadron. Additionally, sixteen aircraft are already in service with the 48th Fighter Squadron at Câmpia Turzii.

The F-16s are expected to strengthen Romania's air defense capabilities. They will cover the period until Romania transitions to fifth-generation fighter jets. However, no new details about the contract between the Romanian and Norwegian governments or the delivery timeline for the remaining aircraft have been provided.

It is worth noting that this aircraft delivery is part of a larger contract, which also includes an initial logistics package and complementary goods and services provided by the United States government.

The aircraft landed at the 86th Air Base in Borcea, marking another significant step in Romania's modernization of its air force. By the end of 2025, the full fleet of 32 F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft is expected to be delivered. The exact service locations and assignments of these aircraft within specific squadrons remain undisclosed.

This news underscores Romania's commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and maintaining a strong air defense presence. The F-16 Fighting Falcons, renowned for their versatility and performance, are set to play a crucial role in this endeavour.
