Threats to the project's success should be avoided at all costs
In a recent appeal, Bavaria's Landrat Peter Dreier and the Bavarian Minister of the Environment have called upon the federal government to secure sustainable financing for Landscape Conservation Associations (LCA). The LCA play a vital role in preserving cultural landscapes, promoting biodiversity, and sustaining sustainable agriculture.
Dreier, the chairman of the Landshut Landscape Conservation Association, has emphasized the importance of these institutions, stating that they are indispensable actors in implementing measures for the care and development of our natural habitats. He has also highlighted the successful work of LCA in Landshut, such as the "Landshut blooms" project, which has seen thousands of fruit trees planted and hundreds of hectares of flower meadows created.
Dreier's statement underscores the financial burden that would be placed on municipalities if the federal government fails to secure sustainable funding for LCA. He believes that it is not financially sustainable for municipalities to step in for the federal government in funding LCA. The federal government's inaction in this regard could result in municipalities taking over the funding, he warns.
The Bavarian Minister of the Environment echoes these sentiments, stating that LCA are important institutions that require sustainable funding due to their role in preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable agriculture. Both officials have written to local Members of the German Bundestag, urging them to advocate for sustainable funding of these institutions.
The funding of LCA is at risk due to tight federal budget resources. If the federal government does not secure sustainable funding, the financial burden could be shifted to municipalities. This would not only be financially burdensome for municipalities but could also compromise the effectiveness of LCA in preserving cultural landscapes and promoting sustainable agriculture.
LCA serve as a link between various interest groups, including farmers, nature conservation organizations, municipalities, and citizens. They are instrumental in the implementation of measures for the care and development of natural habitats. Securing sustainable funding for LCA is crucial for the preservation of our cultural landscapes and the promotion of sustainable agriculture.
As the appeal gains traction, it remains to be seen whether the federal government will take action to secure sustainable funding for LCA. The future of these vital institutions hangs in the balance, and their continued existence is essential for the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage.
