Thirty percent of the waste generated during Notting Hill Carnival was gathered and repurposed by SUEZ for recycling.
In the vibrant heart of London, the streets of Notting Hill echoed with the rhythmic beats of the carnival last week. Over the bank holiday weekend (Sunday 24 - Monday 25 August), the annual celebration took place, with SUEZ leading the street cleaning and waste collection efforts.
Following the festivities, SUEZ deployed 180 staff and 45 waste collection vehicles to clean up the city. The post-carnival cleanup operation was a collaborative effort, with street cleaning teams and graffiti removal experts joining forces to restore the streets to their normal state by Tuesday 26 August.
Councillor Johnny Thalassites and Gary O'Hagan both commended the hard work and efficiency of the cleanup operation. Notting Hill Carnival, with SUEZ collecting an impressive 330 tonnes of waste, was a testament to the company's commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment.
In an effort to address concerns about waste sorting facilities and fires, the industry is advocating for a deposit system for lithium-ion batteries. This move comes in response to two separate fires at Huฬndgen Entsorgungs' Swisttal-Ollheim facility in Germany. The aim is to make battery disposal safer and more efficient.
Meanwhile, Plastic Bank and EZVIZ are working together to remove 20,000 kilograms of plastic waste from the environment. Their mission is to support informal waste workers across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa by encouraging waste collectors to exchange retrieved plastic waste for income and social benefits.
As the world continues to grapple with waste management and environmental concerns, these initiatives serve as a beacon of hope for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.
