Lapse (lapse.com) is an iPhone-based app that turns your device into a disposable camera. Photos taken with Lapse need to wait 1 to 3 hours to "develop in the darkroom," and a vintage filter is automatically added. The app, headquartered in Berkley, California, does not currently have readily available user base data.
Threads is a new social media platform from Meta, launched in July 2023 in Menlo Park, California. Although specific details about its user base, funding, or headquarters were not provided, the platform is focused on sharing text updates and has a strong focus on privacy and security.
Ten Ten is a walkie-talkie app designed for teen audiences, launched in September 2022, with headquarters in Paris, France. The app has hit over 21 million downloads since its release.
BeReal (fizzsocial.app), a photo-sharing app based in Paris, France, was launched in January 2020. BeReal allows users to post one unfiltered photo per day to show their activities to their followers. The platform was acquired in an undisclosed deal.
Fizz is an anonymous social network for college students. It allows users to join private school communities for communication, where they can share posts anonymously. The app also offers an online marketplace integrated into the app to sell and buy items among students on the campus.
Lemon8 (lemon8-app.com) is a photo-centric social media platform from TikTok's parent company (Bytedance). It markets itself as a "lifestyle content community." Lemon8 allows users to edit photos, videos, post content, and discover new content in one app. The platform is headquartered in Singapore.
Coverstar (coverstar.app) positions itself as a "safe TikTok alternative." The platform consistently monitors content, and no explicit or dangerous content is allowed. The platform does not support direct messages for safety reasons. The platform is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, and has received $41.5 million in funding.
