Thirteen individuals apprehended for the homicides of Mexico City government officials
In a shocking turn of events, Mexico City witnessed another high-profile attack, this time targeting personal secretary Ximena Guzman and advisor Jose "Pepe" Munoz, both members of President Claudia Sheinbaum's Morena party. The attack occurred on May 20, leaving the two individuals dead.
Ximena Guzman and Jose "Pepe" Munoz were gunned down in the Mexican capital, an event that President Sheinbaum condemned as "deplorable." This incident is not the first high-profile attack in Mexico City with potential links to drug trafficking. In June 2020, Omar Garcia Harfuch, the city's former security chief and a member of President Sheinbaum's cabinet, survived an attack by heavily armed gunmen. Two of Omar Garcia Harfuch's bodyguards and a passerby were killed in that attack.
Omar Garcia Harfuch, now Sheinbaum's national security minister, blamed the June 2020 shooting on the powerful drug trafficking group, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is also suspected to be involved in the attack on Ximena Guzman and Jose "Pepe" Munoz, although this has not been confirmed.
Thirteen individuals were arrested in connection with the attack on Ximena Guzman and Jose "Pepe" Munoz. The arrests were made as part of a joint operation between local, federal authorities, and the army. The three persons directly involved in the attack on Brugada's personal secretary Ximena Guzman and his advisor Jose "Pepe" Munoz are not specifically named, but the suspected group behind the attack is likely a criminal or paramilitary organization linked to regional conflicts.
The public prosecutor, Bertha Alcalde Lujan, described the attack as a "direct attack with a significant degree of planning" and suggested those who carried it out had prior experience. The motive for the murders remains unclear, as Brugada did not speak about it during a press conference.
Brugada is a close ally of President Claudia Sheinbaum, and the loss of Ximena Guzman and Jose "Pepe" Munoz is a significant blow to her administration. The authorities are working diligently to bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice. As Mexico City continues to grapple with the aftermath of these attacks, the city and its residents are left to wonder about the future and the ongoing battle against crime and violence.
