Has promotion already been decided? Thioune refuses to acknowledge it (for now).

A dream comes true for a city: rejoining the Bundesliga!

Especially after Fortuna's impressive 3-0 win during the first leg of the relegation play-off in Bochum. This victory left no one in Düsseldorf unaffected. Fortuna dismantled the 16th-placed team from the Bundesliga in the end.

"It's completely far-fetched to assume that," said the coach, Daniel Thioune, who is 49 years old. Vincent Vermeij, the goalscorer at 29, shares a similar sentiment. "Age doesn't matter; it would be ridiculous to say we've reached our peak."

None of this has shaken Thioune, who is known for his calm demeanor. After the 3-0 score, he shared in a casual conversation over lunch, "It was a sleepless night for me. I watched some TV at home, scanned through news reports, and was up early in the morning again. I'm still a little unsettled."

He's only played in the Bundesliga and coached there briefly with HSV. Now in Düsseldorf, Thioune has witnessed only improvement since taking over in February 2022 in 16th place. "That was just the first half of the match," he says. "I've received a lot of praise for our upcoming weekend games at 3:30PM. It's inappropriate."

The coach perceives that many people, not just those within the club, may feel overconfident. "No one in our group feels that way," he adds. "We've seen enough incredible occurrences in soccer, including miracles. I've witnessed Bochum play against Union Berlin and Bayern Munich." In recent weeks, Bayern lost 3-2 against Bochum, while VfL won 4-3 against Union.

"A three-goal score within 90 minutes isn't impossible," Thioune states. "We've accomplished that against a first division team. Why can't the first division team do the same against us? We all understand this. Nobody will over-glorify the 3-0 result, and no one will underestimate our opponents."
