Thieves excavate 100-meter-long ditches in search of copper
In the quiet town of Oftersheim, Rhein-Neckar district, an incident of theft occurred last Tuesday, the 15th of the month. The police are currently investigating the case, seeking information from the public after suspects posing as construction workers made off with an estimated €5000 worth of copper cables.
The suspects, who have yet to be identified, dug a 100-meter-long trench near the town's water main. To avoid detection, they set up two warning barriers with tape and worked under the cover of darkness, between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM. They dug about a meter deep and managed to steal some of the copper cables.
When confronted by a witness, the thieves fled in a blue Volkswagen Golf. The car's license plate number was reported as LK 12-ABC. The police are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and are urging any witnesses to come forward with information.
The incident resulted in the temporary shutoff of the water main. The police have reported the incident and are seeking assistance from the public.
