The Parliament of Europe

In a heartwarming ceremony held at the Detmold Town Hall, 50 new German citizens were welcomed into their new home. The fourth naturalization ceremony of the year was a joyous occasion, attended by family and friends, who watched with pride as the 50 Detmold residents, including 20 children, received their German citizenship and naturalization certificates from Mayor Frank Hilker.

The ceremony was accompanied by music from Nick March, who provided touching songs that added an emotional depth to the celebration. A selfie with the mayor was a popular activity after the ceremony, with many new citizens eager to commemorate the special day.

Mayor Hilker emphasized that naturalization is a statement of belonging, trust, and a decision for a new home. He encouraged the new citizens to take advantage of the opportunities that Germany offers, get involved, and actively shape Germany and Detmold.

Hilker quoted Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stating that respecting and protecting human dignity is a task for all. He urged the new German citizens to embody the values of democratic behavior and tolerance, which are at the heart of Germany's constitution.

The new German citizens hail from diverse backgrounds, with 50% coming from Syria, Iraq, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Syria, in particular, accounted for over a quarter of all naturalizations in 2024, with Syrians making up around 28% of all naturalizations. The top five countries were Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Romania, and Afghanistan, together making up about 49% of all naturalizations.

The ceremony concluded with a group photo, a symbolic representation of the newfound unity and belonging among the new German citizens. It was indeed a day of celebration, marking a new chapter in the lives of these individuals and a testament to Germany's commitment to diversity and democratic values.
