The Mysterious Disappearance of the Hand of Faith Gold Nugget

The whereabouts of the world’s largest gold nugget, the Hand of Faith, remain unclear. Once a star attraction at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, the genuine piece is no longer on display there. Casino staff and investigators now claim that several replicas have taken its place across different locations.

The Hand of Faith was discovered in 1980 by Kevin Hillier in Australia using a metal detector. Weighing over 27 kilograms, it became the largest gold nugget ever found with such a device. In 1981, Golden Nugget Inc. purchased it and put it on display in downtown Las Vegas.

The genuine Hand of Faith has vanished from public view, leaving uncertainty over its whereabouts. Casino displays in multiple cities now feature replicas, while the original remains unaccounted for. Until further confirmation, its exact location—and whether it will ever return to Las Vegas—stays unknown.
