The website for the service announced: "As of June 26, ICQ will no longer be functional." For us, ICQ was never a major concern to begin with.
ICQ was introduced by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996. In those early days of the internet, it was incredibly popular, with over 100 million people worldwide using it to stay connected with their friends through its tagline "I seek you."
In the two years following its launch, AOL, a popular internet provider at the time, acquired ICQ for a whopping $407 million (equal to roughly $375 million today). However, its popularity began to wane as other messenger services overtook it, ultimately diminishing its importance.
In 2010, the Russian Mail.ru Group (now known as the VK Group), acquired ICQ for a significantly lower price of $187.5 million (equivalent to approximately $173 million today).
In light of this, the current ICQ operators recommended, "Use VK Messenger for chatting with friends and VK WorkSpace for professional interactions."
