The Minister of Finance is set to determine the appropriate time for the implementation of the much-anticipated fuel surcharge, as part of the new tax law. This provision, aimed at channelling revenues into transport infrastructure projects, has been a topic of discussion in recent times.

Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, has clarified that the fuel surcharge is indeed part of the new tax law. However, he also stated that some people have been giving incorrect information about the fuel surcharge.

The fuel surcharge, expected to ease the burden on commuters and reduce inflation for ordinary Nigerians, is expected to bring down the cost of logistics as well. It's worth noting that the fuel surcharge under the FEMA Act was enacted some years back, but the provision has not yet taken effect.

Contrary to some reports, the federal government has clarified that Nigerians will not be paying a ₦500 fuel surcharge on every ₦10,000 worth of fuel bought from January 2026. This misinformation has been deemed inaccurate and misleading.

The State House recently made public a video by Taiwo Oyedele, where he clarified that the fuel surcharge will take effect based on an order to be released by the Minister of Finance, not in January 2026 as previously claimed. The exact implementation date is yet to be determined.

Taiwo Oyedele also emphasised that the fuel surcharge is not intended to increase the cost of fuel for consumers but rather to improve the country's transport infrastructure. He further urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information.

In conclusion, while the implementation date of the fuel surcharge is yet to be determined, the Minister of Finance will make the official announcement in due course. The public is encouraged to await this announcement and to rely on official sources for accurate information.
