External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) is the most common form, delivering targeted radiation from outside the body to the tumor site. Alpha radiation, emitted during the decay of certain radioactive materials, cannot penetrate the skin but can be harmful if ingested or inhaled, leading to significant health risks, including cancer. Beta radiation, emitted during the decay of certain isotopes, can penetrate the skin to some extent and exposure can cause skin burns and increase the risk of cancer, particularly with prolonged exposure.

It is crucial for patients and their families to understand the potential long-term effects of radiation therapy. Common long-term effects include fatigue, skin changes, organ damage, and an increased risk of secondary cancers. Patients who have undergone radiation therapy should have regular follow-up appointments to monitor for any long-term effects.
