In the heart of Dresden, plans for the demolition and new construction of the Carolabridge have been set in motion. The project manager for this ambitious undertaking is Markus Weber from the Street and Sewerage Department of the state capital.

The demolition of the Carolabridge, which dates back to the 1970s, is expected to commence in 2028. The demolition costs, initially estimated at 18 million euros, have since been revised and are now projected to be around 32 million euros. This increase in costs includes the additional expenses for safety measures, traffic management, and condition assessment of the bridge.

The city administration recently responded to an inquiry from the Left faction in the city council, confirming that 27 million euros are needed for the demolition of all three bridge sections, with an additional five million euros for the aforementioned additional costs.

The collapse of one of the three strands of the Carolabridge, spanning approximately 100 meters, occurred in the night of September 10 to 11, 2024. Fortunately, no vehicles or people were on the collapsed section at the time, and no one was injured in the incident.

The new construction of the Carolabridge is not expected to start before 2028. Construction could begin in the second quarter of 2028, with the project aiming for completion by 2031. The city council has decided on a four-lane replacement for the new construction of the Carolabridge, which will replace all three bridge sections.

The demolition and new construction of the Carolabridge are estimated to cost a total of 32 million euros. However, the city administration is hopeful that these costs will be offset by the benefits that the new bridge will bring to the city and its residents.

As the project progresses, updates and further information will be made available to the public. The city administration and project manager, Markus Weber, are committed to ensuring a smooth and safe demolition and construction process for the Carolabridge.
