The political landscape of Thailand has seen a significant shift following the removal of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by the Constitutional Court. Anutin Charnvirakul, who assumed office on the 7th of September 2025, is now the current Prime Minister.

The special cabinet meeting, convened to address key appointments following Paetongtarn's removal, was held without discussing the dissolution of the House. According to PM's Office Minister Chousak Sirinil, the issue of dissolution was not on the agenda.

The Council of State has clarified that an acting prime minister holds no constitutional authority to dissolve the House of Representatives. Dissolution will only be considered if government formation fails.

Seven ministers, including Education Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat and Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, were absent from the cabinet meeting after submitting leave requests. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai was appointed caretaker prime minister.

Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Akkhara Prompow was also absent from the meeting. Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn was unaccounted for as well.

The caretaker cabinet will handle urgent matters but will avoid making decisions binding the incoming administration. The Ministry of Defence has already delegated operational authority, ensuring that national security will not be affected by the caretaker status, as confirmed by Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit.

Dr Prommin Lertsuridej continues as secretary-general to the prime minister. The Thai-Cambodian border issue is expected to see appointments on Sunday.

In the midst of this political transition, the formation of a new government is still underway. The Pheu Thai Party may seek a parliamentary dissolution if they fail to form a new government. However, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining stability in the interim.
