Texas Representative James Talarico formally announces his campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate position

In a move that has been widely anticipated, Texas Representative James Talarico, D-Austin, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. The 36-year-old Democrat, known for his viral social media moments and appearances on popular podcasts, is set to join former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and former astronaut Terry Virts in the Democratic primary for the coveted seat.

Talarico, a former public school teacher and nonprofit director, has been a vocal critic of Republican-led measures in Texas. He has been particularly outspoken against the mid-decade redistricting effort pushed by former President Trump to protect the GOP's congressional majority. Talarico has also expressed his opposition to the Ten Commandments law and a proposal to set aside time for prayer during the school day, citing Bible verses in his arguments.

The Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Texas is closely watched due to the potential vulnerability of incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the general election. Cornyn is currently facing a tough primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican. Despite Paxton leading in polls, recent surveys suggest the race is tightening.

Talarico has leaned into the idea that Democrats need to show voters they are fighting for the middle class against billionaires and those who would cheat the system. He has expressed the need for the Democratic Party to "flip tables" in response to the critical moment in the country's history.

James Talarico's name recognition is modest among voters outside Central Texas, where he was first elected in a district that narrowly voted for Republican Donald Trump in 2016. However, Talarico's old district was redrawn in 2021 to favor a Republican, and he now represents a solidly blue district in Austin.

Talarico, who has a master's degree in theological studies, frequently draws a distinction between his version of Christianity and that of the Republicans in the Texas Legislature. He has also gained attention for his criticism of Joe Rogan, a politically amorphous podcast host, who suggested Talarico should run for president after a conversation with him.

As the race heats up, Talarico will face stiff competition in the Democratic primary. However, his rising star status among Texas Democrats and his commitment to progressive politics make him a formidable contender. The primary election is scheduled for March 2022, with the general election following in November.
