Tesla's new app features turn EVs into grid power sources and smarter navigators
Tesla is rolling out new features to help owners earn rewards and improve their driving experience. The company plans to let electric vehicle (EV) drivers feed power back into the grid during peak times. At the same time, it is developing an advanced navigation system called Voyager and upgrading its insurance tools.
The updates come as Tesla explores ways to make its cars more interactive with energy networks, though no models are yet certified for full vehicle-to-grid (V2G) use. Owners may soon earn money or bill credits by sharing power from their Teslas with the electrical grid. The Tesla app will display real-time discharge status and alert users during high-demand events. Drivers can also opt out of power sharing if needed, such as before a long trip. The app will automatically check whether a vehicle qualifies based on model, hardware, and subscription status.
Meanwhile, Tesla is working on Voyager, a next-generation navigation system. This could include multi-stop route planning and detailed trip tracking. However, the feature might only be available on newer models with Ryzen processors or the Cybertruck.
On the insurance side, Tesla is improving its interface with a new banner carousel. A native digital ID card system will also allow offline access for policyholders.
Despite these developments, no Tesla vehicles are currently certified for V2G technology. Regulatory changes in Germany by 2026 may influence future adoption, but Tesla has not confirmed specific plans for full V2G integration. The new features aim to give Tesla owners more control over energy use and navigation. The app will track power sharing in real time, while Voyager could enhance route planning. Insurance upgrades will also make policy management easier.
For now, however, Tesla's power-sharing system remains in early stages, with no official V2G certification for its vehicles.
