Tesla Temporarily Halts Model Y Production in Shanghai for Equipment Upgrades

Tesla has announced that it will be temporarily halting part of the production line for the Model Y in its Giga Shanghai factory for approximately three weeks. The pause, which will run from January 22 to February 14, is for equipment upgrades to prepare for higher output of the recently refreshed Model Y.

Orders for the refreshed Model Y opened last week, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in March. The refreshed Model Y is the main source of exports to the Asia-Pacific region from the Giga Shanghai factory, and it is priced starting at 263,500 yuan ($35,900).

The refreshed Model Y features a sleeker exterior with a Cybertruck-inspired LED light across the front and minor interior updates. The Giga Shanghai factory upgrade is aimed at ensuring the refreshed Model Y can increase production to meet the demand for the popular electric vehicle.

Despite the temporary production halt, Tesla's share of battery electric vehicle sales in China slipped to approximately 10.6% in 2021, down from about 16% in 2020. However, it is worth noting that the refreshed Model Y was the best-selling car in China for the year 2024.

Another section producing Model 3 sedans will also pause from January 26 to February 3 in Shanghai. The Giga Shanghai factory upgrade is intended to prepare for higher output of the refreshed Model Y and other electric vehicles in Tesla's lineup.

Tesla has not released any information regarding who is responsible for carrying out the equipment activities during the three-week production halt. It is unclear how this will impact the deliveries of the refreshed Model Y in March, but Tesla has a reputation for maintaining high production standards and meeting its delivery deadlines.

In conclusion, Tesla has announced a temporary production halt for the Model Y in Shanghai for equipment upgrades to prepare for higher output of the refreshed Model Y. The refreshed Model Y is the main source of exports to the Asia-Pacific region from the Giga Shanghai factory and is priced starting at 263,500 yuan ($35,900).
