The transition between regenerative and hydraulic braking in the Model Y's new braking system is seamless, ensuring consistent braking performance. The system prioritizes regenerative braking whenever possible, maximizing battery conservation and extending range in the Model Y. This dynamic switching between the two braking methods optimizes both energy recapture and stopping power.

One of the hydraulic brake circuits in the Model Y's new braking system is controlled electronically by the vehicle's onboard driving system. This circuit is designed to respond to real-time conditions, allowing the car's onboard computers to determine the ideal braking strategy. The other hydraulic brake circuit is for direct driver input, maintaining a stable and predictable pedal feel regardless of which braking method is in use.

The new braking system in the Model Y is unique in its ability to apply maximum regenerative braking at all times, even when pressing the brake pedal. This feature improves energy efficiency compared to traditional braking setups and helps reduce maintenance costs by minimizing wear on traditional brake components.
