Tensions rise as Eklat claims escalating disputes
In the heart of Tampere, Finland, the EuroBasket 2025 game between Germany and Lithuania took an unfortunate turn. World champion basketball player Dennis Schröder and his team emerged victorious with a score of 107:88, but the celebration was marred by racist taunts directed at Schröder during the match.
The racist behaviour, which included monkey noises, was reported to have occurred at halftime. Schröder, who has been a beacon of talent on the court, did not let the incident deter him from focusing on the game. However, he made it clear that he does not respect or accept such racist behaviour.
Following the incident, Schröder's wife, Ellen Schröder, publicly spoke out against the hateful comments. She expressed her disapproval of the racist behaviour and wished the perpetrators' parents had raised them better. In a poignant Instagram post, she commented, "Unfortunately, such harassment, especially when you're in the public eye, is everywhere."
Ellen Schröder shared screenshots of offensive and racist messages on her Instagram account, further highlighting the extent of the issue. She stated that racist harassment is a common issue, but she remains undeterred in her fight against it.
In response to the incident, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) banned one spectator from all further games due to the racist taunts. Moreover, Lithuanian basketball fans have been banned by FIBA from further EuroBasket games due to the racist verbal abuse directed toward Germany's captain Dennis Schröder.
The German Basketball Federation (DBB) also took action, ejecting two people from the arena after receiving reports from the German coaching staff.
Despite the upsetting incident, Schröder and his team managed to secure a win, demonstrating their resilience and determination. Schröder himself commented, "I cannot accept the racist behaviour and that it should not exist in the world."
As the EuroBasket tournament continues, the focus remains on the exciting games ahead. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to eradicate racism from sports and society as a whole.
